The United States Bureau of Reclamation built Lake Casitas in 1959 as a storage reservoir for drinking water and irrigation water. The facility is used for both drinking and irrigation water. Coyote Creek meets the Ventura River two miles before it meets Lake Casitas. The lake is fed by Santa Ana Creek and the North Fork of Coyote Creek. Because the impounded watershed is insufficient to fill the lake, the system was designed to redirect water from the Ventura River into a canal under particular conditions.
